Recommendations for US cons?
Can anyone recommend any US cons I should check out, preferably as a trader/artist? A chance has just come up for me to travel to New York this summer, either in July or September. It might be too late to sign up to many of them but I’d love to give it a go as most of my fanbase are from the US. Any conventions that are particularly good for LGBT comics would be fantastic, also hot damn a chance to meet all the US folks I’ve been chatting to all these years!
Well, I will be going to Dragoncon in September, but most of the hotels are booked up…
Dragon Con is cool and all, but trying to be an artist or a vendor there is a nut roll. I love that convention, but the nepotism of the upper eshelons is supremely difficult to overcome. Just saying.
I admit I haven’t actually gotten around to going, but I’ve heard good things about ConnectiCon. It’s in July and not ridiculously far away from New York.
yes, connecticon is a good con! however, I don’t think slots are available for booths now. there is a waiting list, but I don’t know how long it is. sorry!
SPX! Small Press Expo! It’s in September! Table lottery is happening right now! spxpo.com!
Signed up for the lottery now!
If you could come in October there’s what’s NY comic-con which is huge and fantastic.
ComicCon is in NYC in October. That’s really the only one I know about, since it’s essentially at my back door.
Contact Alex, the author of the comic Artifice and The Young Protectors. He is from San Francisco California and I believe he has alot of experience with cons good for LGBT comics, and he’s been to LGBT cons. I’m guessing he’d gladly help you.

Already did that! He’s a lovely guy.
Boston Comic Con, because I’m selfish and that’s the nearest one to where I live. It’s in August, though.
The Asheville Comic Expo is 10/24/15 this year and is quite LGBT friendly, despite being in North Carolina.
I thought it read coins and got really excited for a bit.
Emerald city in Seattle, WA, then the Portland, OR one which I hear is even better.
You should come to RocCon: Rochester, NY. It would be awesome to see you
I SECOND THIS
It’s in late september
Ooh Ooh! *Waves hand frantically* if you’re going to be in New York then it’s only an hour and half to Toronto (yeah you have to cross a border but you’ll have your passport anyway and Canadians are super nice!) Fan Expo is on Labor day weekend (Sept 3-6)
Be warned however Tab we’d love to have you in Canada (i’m also a trontotarian.) but Fax Expo is even more packed here than comic con.
Uh, toronto is two hours at least from Buffalo, New York. Not sure where you’re getting hour and a half from;;;;
The ones I know about are YaoiCon in San Francisco in September, Bent Con in Los Angeles in November, Rainboow Con in Tampa in June or July, and another one in Philadelphia (the name escapes me) in October. The last three are specifically targeted to the LGBT community, and Alex Woolfson has been to them all. If you contact him, I’m sure he can give you the info you need to participate.
Got it! The name of the one in Philadelphia is Nijicon.
If you ever can come in June, Akon in Texas is pretty big. There’s a sizeable amount of LGBTQ friendly stuff at that one (and I would totally buy some poof pants XD)
Late July is Otakon in Baltimore Maryland. That’s a four hour drive from New York, but it’s one of the biggest anime cons there are and the artist alley is usually filled with Webcomic artist, whether their comic is anime themed or not.
CONvergence in Minneapolis is pretty sweet.
There is the WizardWorld comic con in Chicago this August…I would be hyper happy to see you there. I love love love your work.
Katsucon in National Harbor is held at the Gaylord Hotel and Convention Center February Valentines weekend. (this is in Maryland) There are quite a few webcomic artists that go including the authors of Namesake (who were there this past con) as well as a few other authors who sell 18+ works! It’s a great con I’ve been going for three years now ever since I moved to the area.
Katsucon is a good one. I live in Washington, DC and got to check it out for the first time this year. The National Harbor also hosts MAGFest, a music and gaming festival. It’s very indie friendly and a lot of fun. A lot of independent artists sell at their trader market there. In DC, there’s also Awesomecon which is HUGE and AnimeUsa, also huge.
