One of those bizarre cultural differences between Americans and Brits. Here, you sometimes have to specifically tell the doctor you do NOT want your baby to be circumcised, although many places are getting to be less snip-snip-happy. Still, it’s rare to find an uncut guy in the USA. We get a European mate and we’re all like “whoa, cool…um…shit, what do I do with this extra bit?”
And likewise the other way round here. “errm…okay. I think you’re missing something here, what do I have to do now?” I don’t really understand why America is so “snip-snip-happy”. Foreskin is awesome!
I’ll second that. I’ve never encountered a circumcised penis – I’d be worried about hurting it because it doesn’t have its safety covering.
I remember my friend getting an american boyfriend years ago and everyone asking him a tonne of personal questions because they found the idea so bizarre XD Poor guy. It does seem to be a little controversial, even in the US, though – I’ve had people say to be “Oh you complain about FGM, but you wouldn’t think twice about getting your baby boy circumcised!”. Kinda defeats their point when I tell them we don’t do that so much over here, but there does seem to be a lot of people who’re up in arms about the whole idea.
I’ve had sex with a fair amount of guys, and only my fiancé (American, of course) is cut. What I was worried about was a loss of sensation, but as he was cut as a baby there is NONE, and there is none of the excess skin, though of course there’s still some skin.
Of course, more skin or less skin is a preference thing, but there’s no worry about hurting a cut penis any more than an uncut one.
I’ll agree that it was really surprising to hear that it is so common in the US, but I don’t mind =3 at all!
I’ve slept with two men without foreskins- both for medical reasons (my fiance is the reason I don’t say they’re circumcised, as he never had one to be removed.) They’ve both had more trouble reaching orgasm than the other- uncut- men I’ve been with, and I’ve been with quite a lot. Can’t say if it’s due to the lack of foreskin reducing sensation or if the medical issues did that, but it does leave me concerned.
Actually I think most Brits (and presumably other Europeans) find the idea of habitual circumcision to be repulsive and disturbing. Why the hell is it okay in America to alter a child’s genitalia without medical cause?
Interestingly enough, a rumor started going about in the US that people who were circumcised didn’t masturbate, which is total bull. So parents were like “oh yes, we don’t want our child to go to hell, snip it.”. Then it just evolved to be the cultural norm and people don’t question it. But I agree, even though I live in America I don’t know how to handle uncircumcised.
I always understood it to be largely down to the influence of Mr JH Kellogg as a means of discouraging wanking, which also influenced the US medical profession in beng generally in favour of the snip (and I guess the fees from the proceedure would keep them in favour of it??)
But yeah… uncommon in the UK (religious/medical reasons aside) – from memories of school showers, I can’t actually recall any cut lads in my year (or the half of the year I shared PE with every week).
I’m glad we aren’t routinely cut, the foreskin is a wonderful and sensitive part of the anatomy and fun to play with ;) The whole cleanliness thing is rubbish, it’s easy (and fun) to clean an uncut penis.
And the religious thing… they are basically saying that their God’s design is imperfect and man must alter it??
For Jews, circumcision is a sign of their covenant with God. It started with Abraham as a way of marking the Jews as God’s chosen people. All those in Abraham’s household, slaves included, were to be circumcised. To my knowledge it has nothing to do with imperfection/perfection.
I was under the impression Americans started routinely circumcising because it is a Jewish religion this g (marks covenant with God from I Wana say Abraham when his wife couldn’t get pregnant because they had gotten old) and cuz Christianity is derived from Judaism some practices got scooped up (excluding historical periods where circumcision could get you affected and/or killed) and because America liless to proclaim itself a Christian nation it became the norm.
Not to mention the whole belief that being cut is more sanitary.
Thiugh, on point of sanitation, I’ve read that uncut individuals have a higher risk of catching STIs, though that probably ties back, at least to some degree, to people not knowing how exactly to clean their genitals
Well I don’t think it would have to do with the Jewish religion because considering the time it started I don’t think america cared about anything but Christianity and I think the Jewish religion was looked down upon, like most things aaha goddammit America. But, the foreskin isn’t there for just any reason. It’s used to keep the head of the penis moist and it’s actually protective. It is a little harder to clean but you just need to flip it up and lightly scrub it.
There’s actually quite a scientific debate about wether cicumcisions help prevent STDs. Some of the study that show a health benefit have been proven “wrong” by methodically better studies and there are also some STDs that are more likely to infect circumcised people. On average the health benefit is probably not very high, especially if the notion “I’m circumcised so I don’t catch STDs as easily” leads to more reluctance towards condom use.
My experience with expartners is that circumcised men have more difficulty reaching orgasm and regret beeing cicumcised as a child.
Since STDs shouldn’t be an issue until at least adolescence, let the grown boy decide and don’t cut away one of the most sensitive bodyparts of a helpless baby
I’m not sure if I should be relieved or upset that I’m not the only one to discover that in circumcised partners. I am relieved to say that in the case of these lovers, it was a necessary procedure, so it wasn’t really a thing to regret.
I do believe it’s a religious thing. My brother-in-law is the only American man I personally know who is uncut. He and my sister had a son, and he wanted his son to remain uncut, too. It caused an uproar in the family, with people literally screaming and shaking Bibles, spouting that it’s unbiblical, blah blah. He had to really argue his point, even to his wife, about how it’s not “unbiblical” or filthy. So yeah, Jewish circumcision somehow remained as a “Christian” concept in the USA.
The start had to do with uptop (the whole “circumcision = no masturbation” thing) which, because masturbation is forbidden in the bible, became a religious thing. The Bible doesn’t say Christians need to circumcise (Jesus dying = Old Testament means fuck all to Christians), but between masturbation being a no-no and it becoming a societal norm stateside, it’s kinda snowballed into people THINKING it’s a Christian thing.
(Also from what I understand traditional circumcision is just a nick in the foreskin, not a removal of it?)
More like a cultural difference between Americans and almost everyone else. It’s done by Jews and I think Muslims for religious reasons, and of course occasionally it’s done for medical reasons, but the U.S. is pretty unique in this regard.
Being in medical school in the US at the moment, I can say first hand that there is an unfortunately INCORRECT teaching that gets perpetuated basically saying that men who are uncircumcised will have lots of health risks due to sanitation issues. The ones that are predominantly cited if a student (me) pushes the issue are all related to elderly men who either do not or cannot clean under the foreskin properly. And then, the logic of “well it’s painful and traumatic but a baby won’t remember it or miss it” is used to justify why it’s done to babies and not, y’know, the elderly men who might actually be at risk and capable of making their own decision about cutting part of their body off.
Thankfully, among my fellow med students, there is a general push back against circumcision. Not that doctors won’t perform it, just that they are not necessarily counseling parents to DO it.
So I’m an American who’s been with reasonable number of guys. Personally, I’ve only come across one man who was uncut, and just to prove a point he was not born in the US, he was born in the UK. He was actually my first so at the time I was completely baffled in general, but even more so because it wasnt quite what I was expecting. At 16 I had a pretty concrete image in my head, and to say the least I was surprised and at first a little confused. This particular man was pretty well endowed so that didn’t really help my situation, but he literally had to take a moment and explain and encourage me to go ahead and touch him even more so than before he had taken his pants off. I have been with this particular guy multiple times through the years, and I have to say I always seem to second guess myself and wonder if there is something else he would prefer I be doing than what I guess you could call an average blow job… I’ve been with a number American men, who were all cut, and the only difference I’ve ever noticed although whether this is just a personal thing or not, the man who was uncut was able to last much longer compared to anyone else I’ve been with.
Woah really? It’s rare to find uncircumcised guys in America? I’ve only ever been with people who were uncut. Though now that I think about it, none of their parents were born in the US, so maybe that’s why.
Hi American Male here. The whole circumcision thing started as a minister claiming medical facts, stop masturbating by getting rid of the foreskin, eventually it became pretty much law for most states. When those laws started getting fought we started hearing “medical” reasons why the snip was good. Fast forward to 2000 and the medical facts we have had shoved in our faces started getting proven wrong. States started changing the laws, but hospitals did not, even today most hospitals will say oh a boy, well you have to get him circumcised, but since it is an optional procedure your insurance wont be covering it so we will just tack on this 300 dollar bill. You as the parent wont be asked you will be told that this is the way it will be done. Now some places are giving you the choice but it is still rare.
Hi, American Mom here. While in the past circumcision was the norm here, there are no laws stating infant boys must be circumcised (several cities have actually tried to outlaw it.) At the birth of both my children (the oldest 10 years ago) I was asked in a very no pressure way if I wanted them circumcised. I said no, they made a note of it, and that was the last I heard about it. So no, hospitals are not forcing the procedure on boys right and left. In 2011 54% of infant boys in the US were circumcised and every one of them had to receive permission from a parent or guardian, it is illegal to perform a procedure without.
The oldest of my 4 younger brothers actually was forcibly circumcised without consent of my mother or step father. My mom was passed out from giving birth and my stepdad was still on his way to the hospital, and they snipped my brother before either of them was there to sign off on the procedure.
My mom made sure not to give birth at that hospital again (because seriously who the fuck does that), and gave explicit instructions on arrival for my other brothers to not get circumcised.
Well whaddya know. Murfs is uncircumcised. You learn something new everyday.
Since this is based in the UK…yeah, its unusual not to be.

Down here in Australia People only really get them for medical reasons like phimosis or infection etc.
