I think I’m finally getting into this series. Don’t get me wrong, smut is fine and dandy and there can never be enough smart smut (not to mention that bondage and powerplay are among my things) but this arc… ooh, shivers down my spine. First got that feeling when I read the last line of page 2 of this arc. It seems half-joking but there is this dark undercurrent of… self loathing I suppose? And here again, Jefferson might be willing to satisfy his desires but (on a bad day?) he still perceives them as unnatural, dirty, defiling, perhaps even infectious. We tend to talk about the need to accept ourselves and we generally mean to feel good with who you are but I always found this phrase can be interpreted in a more sinister way: accepting that you are something vile and unnatural and you can do nothing about it. I’d say “F Victorian period and its effed up morality, hypocrisy and bigotry” if I could say that the comics has become an irrelevant abstraction, but it’s not. I love and hate the dark side of this story at the same time.
I like the cross-hatching for the flashbacks!
Vile fops!
