Shades Of A 009
Internet is back! Trying out another new font- this one is called Manly Men. When we figure out which one you guys actually like then I’ll change the rest to match.

I like this new font(Manly Men)
And this comic is great so far!
This font is much better. It’s easy to read, even on my phone.
I gotta say that I preferred the original font. I don’t mind it so much, though. The jaggies around the speech bubbles are kind of throwing me off, though.
This font is alright by me.
I agree that Manly Men is easier to read than what you had been using.
This font is better than the last two ones. Much easier to read.
Definitely think this is the most legible one you’ve used. I can’t say I have any eyesight/reading issues but I’d think this one is a huge step up from the original for anyone who might have had problems with it.
I feel bad for Tab with the font comments!
We love Tab! And the comic. The start of the comic is the best time to iron out any tiny kinks such as font, so that they don’t detract from the awesomeness that will undoubtedly be the story.
As for me, I think this font is a definite improvement over the last one, and also better than the first.
Dungeon monitors are like the best thing about being at public play parties. MY friend made sure to tell me they were a thing before we went, so I’m putting this one on Anwar’s friend.
This font is clearest of the three, but also screamiest. Original one was fitted better, but specially n and h were really alike and the kerning uneven. Also I noticed the white around speech bubbles, it specially pops out on dark pages, and as all other lines are smooth.
This. Poor Tab with his ‘font issues’.
I third what you have to say. The text is perfectly legible, but really screamy, but maybe it just needs to be a bit smaller? This is the first page where I immediately noticed the halo, maybe because the text isn’t so distracting?
Poor Tab having to deal with finding a font that the internet is happy with.
This font is much nicer, it has it’s own flair different from the font from Khaos but is also easily legible.
Also, I’m loving Chris more and more.
Like the font. Cute name. Don’t like teh all caps.
Loving the comic!
MUCH better.
Soooo easy to read ;). Also it is really nice to see a Mistress for once not all decked out in horribly uncomfortable and (to me) not very dominant clothing!
I like this font. Really REALLY easy to read font.
Also,
The backwards pointing thumb is a thorough success! :D
Manly Men works for me :)
Very easy to read.
meh. 2nd one was better, although this is more accessible.
This font is just perfect ! Thank you Tab for listening to your readers and being ready to make some changes, you are such a cool guy!!
This new font is much easier to read than the previous n_n
This font is nice and legible, though the name is silly x)
This font looks a lot better to me!
I didn’t like the last font you tried; this one is better. I’m not sure what’s wrong with the original one though, and I’m not convinced that having everything in upper case is necessarily a good idea.
By ‘original’, I meant the one used throughout Khaos.
I like it better but yeha, mayhaps better not all caps and I’m starting to notice the white stuff surrounding them. Still, I will read and enjoy it no matter the font for sure.
So, Tab, this may be the only time in my life I’ll say it, but I like Manly Men.
But not as much as I’m liking Chris. We get to keep him, yeah?
This one is far better than the last page’s font, but I prefer the first one. The last page made everyone’s voice sound strange in my head. This font makes it sound like everyone is yelling, much like when someone types in all caps.
IT IS REALLY OFF PUTTING TO SEE. I DON’T MIND THE STYLE MUCH, BUT THE FACT THAT IT IS ALL CAPS KIND OF MAKES MY EYES BLEED A LITTLE. I HATE TO SAY IT, BUT YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE A HARD TIME FINDING A LEGIBLE FONT THAT DOESN’T CHANGE THE WAY YOUR CHARACTERS COME ACROSS. PROBABLY WOULD BE EASIER TO STICK TO A TRIED AND TRUE METHOD, BUT IF YOU’RE GOING TO TRY SOMETHING NEW, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND SOMETHING PLAIN LOOKING. FANCY TEXT IS HARD TO READ IN MASS QUANTITY.
This font seems so forceful to me. It’s very in-your-face. I’m with Stropy – perhaps you could try it without the caps and with a slightly lower font size? I’m sorry if I sound like a diva.
Just gotta say, I prefer my “i”s to either be fully lower case or with serifs. If a font’s going to go full cap for most of the letters then it should for all of them.
well, they are in all caps. i had to actually go look to see what you meant. but it’s actually pretty standard in comics (since the majority of comics use capital letters) for the letter “i” to be written without serifs and for the word “I” to be written with. it’s a matter of readability and spacing.
tab–i actually like this font best. it definitely makes it easier on the eyes. plus, i’m not sure that i’ve seen too many comics that actually use lower-case letters. (like, to the point that this read as normal rather than all-caps to me until i saw people pointing it out.)
though actually, i think the shouting issue is less that it’s in all caps and more that it looks like everything’s in italics. the one bubble that’s actually IN italics doesn’t look all that different from the rest of the text.
I’m aware of this, simply stating my preference as that was what was being asked. Frankly the font doesn’t bother me that much, it’s just a personal tic I have over sans-serif “i”s and “l”s, which obviously isn’t really a problem with this font. I do however see that the size more than anything is a problem with this font. Maybe something similar, but that takes up less space and is a little less “aggressive,” if that makes sense.
I like this font much more but I think it perhaps needs to be lower case rather than all caps, that might solve the SHOUTING issue.
This font is my favorite. Also, this comic is my favorite.
This one is better. I still prefer the original though.
I don’t really like all-caps, but I suppose it’s a venerable tradition in comics. What seems weird to me is that it’s all italicized.
Loving the comic so far!
Not a big fan of any of the fonts so far, to be honest. Manly Men is better than the previous ones if only for legibility purposes, but its still not a very good looking font, in my opinion.
Story-wise, I’ve been reading your works regularly since the middle of side story 2, and this seems like it’ll be even better than Khaos was.
This font is much better than the other two. A lot easier to read. I do think that the slantyness and boldness of it makes it seem like that characters are yelling, though.
Good font choice here, simple and easy to read, without being boring.
This font is the most legible. I don’t think it looks “screamy” or off putting at all.
I like this font better than the one in the previous page. It’s clearer and easier to read. A bit big though.
This new font is easier to see on a smaller screen, all caps is okay for me, but I guess some people dislike it. Maybe a font with all caps but first letter of sentences is bigger? I hate trying to find good fonts, but reading awkward ones on my phone hurts my head, so I’m really happy you’re giving the audience a few choices.
Chris is awesome. It’s a relief to meet people like that at social gatherings, especially when (like me) you’re terrified of everyone.
Font doesn’t have as much personality (so much for manly men ;-) but it’s much easier to read, so it’s my favorite so far.
Yeah, I’m in the “this is too screamy” camp. I had to really struggle not to feel like the characters were shouting at each other on this page. I didn’t have a problem with the original Khaos font, although I do agree that, on going back a couple pages, the first Shades of A font is kinda hard to read.
Count me as another vote for “too screamy”. I actually thought that the characters were raising their voices to be heard over the noise from the rest of the party. I like the legibility but dislike the boldness. My fav so far was the second attempt but that was less than ideal also.
I have faith that eventually Tab will find us the perfect font, thanks for putting in the work to do so!
I like this font the best so far, but I’m another vote for a bit shouty. I would love either a thinner version, or a small-caps version of this font. Other than that, the pros outweigh the cons for me.
Also, hands are hard to pull off, but you’re nailing it.
Dido for the font being a bit forceful, but the best one tried so far. I’d say my ranking would be this one, the first one, then the one from last page. I really didn’t like the one from last page- too wobbly and stuff. Loving the comic so far :)
I also really like the fractal-ish design pictures where avatars usually go. Those are pretty cool.
Chris is the awesomest guy. If I ever find myself visiting a fetish club one day, wide-eyed and timidly skulking near the wall (and probably clutching my drink JUST as defensively as Anwar), I hope I meet a Chris too (or a Christine, if that’s how it be).
Actually, judging form the pattern my life tends to follow, what’ll probably happen is I’ll work up the courage to complement someone on an accessory or fancy makeup, and somehow will wind up an hour later inserting polite “I’m listening” sounds into their monologue on all the things that have been driving them spare in their life this month. I seem to attract personal stories from strangers when I try this weird “social interaction” thing other people seem to go for.
I hope we can get an introduction to Anita soon that doesn’t involve anything that would need “sorting out”. Additionally hoping that Chris will be a reoccurring character. Seriously, awesome guy so far.
OMG So much easier to read than the other font. I love it. And the story so far is great. It’s getting even better though now that Mistress Anita was introduced. I wonder what will happen. <3
Since you’re looking for font comments: I’m not crazy about this one, it feels too italic. I also don’t like the all-caps thing. Of the three you’ve used in ‘Shades’, I liked the first one the best. That being said, I liked the one from Khaos more.
Definitely like this font the best so far. The others are so hard to read.
Just wanted to throw out a little factoid out there about the font. I’ve read the comments, yes this one is legible. It’s easy on the eyes. Yes there’s a small halo effect on the bubbles. However, for a trial and error basis, it’s a good font. Just needs to be adjusted.
As for the font being in all caps, I have to remind folks of one thing. In the comic / Manga format, the letterers use Uppercase, so that if they need to use italics to make an emphasis on something it is still legible on the slant.
Now, I’m no expert but I think it’s safe to assume she kept it uppercase for this reason. That and just about every published book in the graphic novel, comic, as well as manga format all use Uppercase regardless. So it shouldn’t be off putting at all, since it goes without saying that professionally, uppercase is the way to go when it comes to lettering.
Not only that, lower case lettering would look squished. It’s all based on the same height of the letters, as well as how quickly we can recognize the letters while reading without having to distinguish a g from a 9. This is more based on the fact that some comic letters letter things by hand. Uppercase = less mess in the biz as it were.
Though with a typed font, I do see the point that lower case may be easier to read. But over all, I think uppercase is fine, cause well it’s a comic, and not a giant wall of text, like my comment.
Other then that, I have no real issues at all. Page is great, story is off to a great start, and I look forward to more.
not she, he. That was a goof up on my part.
