This really does bring a lot of things into light, why her parents “encouraged” Amber to make friends with the “right” people. Her mom saw that Amber was developing feelings with Nay, and instead of giving her daughter advice of what to do about it, she just subtly tried to keep her away from her best friend.
And that’s not okay. It should never be okay. A whole bunch of grief could have been prevented had Amber been able to turn to her parents for help. Instead, her mom tried to sweep it under the rug, and her daughter went through so much stress trying to keep her feelings a secret. (For god’s sake, she tried to blackmail *Charlie*.) On top of that, they were essentially trying to control who she could be friends with, which is also not okay.
