Not necessarily. One of the bad things about rape is that it taints future relationships. She literally says “If you don’t like it, I’ll stop.” But he’s basically haunted by the past demons.
This is why ENTHUSIASTIC consent is the only consent. I know Charlie thinks she’s got all the permission she needs by telling Jamie to stop her if he wants but she didn’t follow that up with getting positive verbal confirmation and checking in as she continued. She let her own feelings cloud her judgement here. We all need to recognize in our relationships that we don’t know and can’t actually know what other people are thinking and feeling and that people can change how they feel from moment to moment. So since we all know that consent can be withdrawn at any time we need to be sure we are open to receiving that feedback and not just assuming everything is good… that’s how sexual assault happens from a person who isn’t a rapist playing power games. Charlie’s intention doesn’t change the harm she’s caused (although it, I think, earns her a chance to do better).
What’s extra awful about this is I don’t think this has that much to do with Charlie being trans. When Jamie was having sex before, he was running from his feelings. He was with girls who he could have a passive role with and a big part of that was not being emotionally attached. Charlie doesn’t understand the difference, so she believes if sex doesn’t involve her body she can be just like the cis girls. Jamie doesn’t having have a problem with seeing her as a woman, he’s conflicted about what her identity means in the context of his abuse. That conflict and the emotional connection he has with Charlie means he can’t be with her without actively processing his trauma. He doesn’t know how to express this other than “I’m working on it”, but that does express that he knows it’s about him, not her
On the other hand, it’s not really fair for her to be the Mcguffin in Jamie’s self-discovery and healing, which is why I don’t think a different ending to Jamie’s story would feel earned
No! He’s not fucking okay Charlie! You’re fucking raping him!
