The teens and the audience were justifiably freaking out about this bad idea romance and it turns out Charlie’s mom was ahead of us all and already tested Jamie and I am making the weirdest strangled gigglesquee.
There’s also this aspect of Jamie having processed a lot of his trauma at this point, and getting to step into this non-homophobic, non-transphobic version of himself with Heather. He’s getting to speak with someone who’s never known him as Jamie the Homophobe and in a way it’s a bit like Charlie and Tom making friends that have only known them as themselves. Tab’s big on role reversals. He’s seeing the dissonance between the way he was and the way he’s becoming–“and I was someone she considered ‘safe'”. It makes this a really huge turning point in Jamie’s story even though it’s a seemingly small, wholesome convo. I got to push my own bully toward a similar, though less dramatic journey a few years after I first read this comic and I honestly think it helped me believe it was possible for him to change <3

I still consider Charlie’s Mom Heather as the coolest ever! But I admit that Steve’s parents are also pretty cool in general and about him and Mark…
tom’s mom DEFINITELY deserves a mention here too! I think she’s my favorite actually. And Alex’s parents are amazing as well.
