“I don’t think people should used their pasts as an excuse for their actions.”
This is always a mentality that I have mixed issues over. On one hand, it’s true and that one’s horrible actions, no matter the reason, should never not be seen as horrible. But in relation to child abuse such as this, it’s very easy to misconstrue this as the victim blaming themselves for letting the abuse get to them and making them a horrible person, when as a kid it’s very easy for your parents to influence and brainwash you into their liking.
I just feel like there’s a difference between making excuses and realizing how much of your present you is influenced by your past.
That’s the difference between excusing and explaining. You can use your past to EXPLAIN why do horrible things, but it doesn’t EXCUSE said horrible things. Very important distinction.
True. But the way Jamie puts it in the comic, it sounds like he’s dismissing his past altogether. Like it has no weight on his actions *at all*. This despite psychology supporting that high stress during childhood affects a child’s developing mentality, even down to their brain.
Saying that a person’s shitty childhood doesn’t affect their actions *at all* is just as bad as using it to excuse all their shitty behavior.
I also now realize *why* this bothers me. Because here, in this case, only Jamie is seeking out help for his behavior; his mother isn’t doing the same. She’s essentially getting off scott free while Jamie does all the work to fix the damage she caused.
