London, 1665. The Great Plague. At this time, European doctors falsely believed that disease was transmitted through bad smells (‘miasma’). Their masks were stuffed with sweet smelling substances down their beaks, thus ensuring the physician’s ‘protection’.
I got to see a burlesque show about a year ago with a guy in one of these masks, a large black hat, black shirt, vest, trousers, boots, tie, and greatcoat.
*Fans self* No idea what the hell it is about these masks for me…
I was very disappointed when he took it all off, which I’m pretty sure is not the proper response to a burlesque show, but meh. I yam what I yam.
