Sir, Butler and Boy ~ Rules and Regulations ~ Page 1
You know where we haven’t had a scene yet? THE ATTIC! Let’s get ready to tick this one off the list.
The attic in the house is currently used for storage (which is where John finds the bureau in Stocks and Bonds ) but it would normally be where the female servants in a household lived.
And yeah, those stairs are pretty normal for attic access in England. What can I say- we like danger.
For some odd reason, I imagine all of James’s waistcoats to be made of yellow or gold fabric. Doesn’t matter what pattern or design is on them. They’re all yellow or gold in my head.
As for the story–I want to see this note now. I hope it’s nothing bad.
Gold works for me! Though in a strange way I don’t see these three in colour, possibly due to drawing them in black and white
My imagination likes to provide missing colors. LOL Just one of my quirks, probably developed through my writing. I’m so used to imagining the clothing my characters are wearing in color that I just sort of habitually mentally color things like SBB.
I see it as yellow too, or gold embroidered.
Gotta say, you’ve really stepped up your art game with this whole series. That first panel is perfect, and gets across the servant stairs so effectively, it increases immersion.
I agree… I started yeard ago with Khaos, and your art has leveled up a lot! I love seeing new pages!!!
I have to agree too. I love the artwork in this series. It’s fantastic.
Awww shucks everyone- thank you!
I mean, in the States, attic access is via a hybrid staircase/ladder that is attached to the ceiling by a hinge at the top, cords/metal brackets that don’t really hold it, and pretty much nothing else.
(In my experience, anyway.)
Pretty good example: https://energy.gov/sites/prod/files/38316_attic_access.jpg
It’s actually a major plot point in a different webcomic I read that a main character actually falls off one and is severely injured as a result. A tiny staircase in the wall seems drastically safer.
Ive been on both of these types of stairs… the tiny ones in england are also usually a bit too steep… Im always afraid of falling!!!
I’ve lived in a house with a full regular staircase to the attic; the stairway was over the cellar stairs, which was also a full regular staircase. In this house, the attic was finished, with a landing at the top of the stairs and two rooms, one of which my parents slept in.
The place was haunted, though . . .
I’ve got one of these in my house! It replaced the postage sized hole that they considered acceptable for loft access XD
No, a ladder would be safer. That staircase only lets you balance on your toes, as this picture indicates. The ladder lets you position your feet anywhere you like on the rung. There doesn’t seem to be a handrail on this staircase, whereas you can grip rungs with your hands. Also, this staircase has a twist, but ladders don’t. The ladder you show is even slightly less steep than the staircase shown. Some English attic staircases might have handrails or lack twists, but I can’t imagine them having any benefit that makes up for the awkward foot placement.
Is John crying? He seems so put together in the next page.
