This story is apparently about lots of pattern work. I think I realised the last one had barely any in, so it’s time for wallpaper and waistcoats and confession screens OH MY.
The snow is fwumping to the ground as a metaphor for James’ shock. Can you have metaphors in visual work, or is it called something else? Either way it felt like a great ‘pause beat’ panel before we go onto what His Family actually entails…
While “family” could refer to Mom and Dad, I suspect this is more a case of Wife and Kids.
But I could be wrong.
I dunno – from what I’ve gleaned (from perhaps not very reliable sources), I think that if Victorian servants were married, their families either became part of the household (for example, butlers’ wives would work as housekeepers), or they would leave and find a position in a larger household where their families could live on the estate. On the other hand, John’s a gardener, and grounds staff had different circumstances and rules to house staff…
But the title of this episode is “Sins of the Father”, and *John* is going to confess his sins, so that is what leads me to think this is a Wife and Kids situation for him.
Considering that divorce wasn’t that common in this era, and he’s going to *confession* (which is Catholic, and Catholicism doesn’t permit divorce), I just wonder if John’s position with James’s household is just a convenient excuse for him and his wife to live separately, the relationsihip he has with James and Jefferson notwithstanding. If it is a Wife and Kids situation with him, he may have been pressued into marriage by family and be doing his duty by them, but also doing whatever he can to escape the situation.

Hey, Tab, wasn’t sure if this was the best way to tell you but there’s an ad I keep getting at the side of the page with the phrase “but girls don’t have penises” in. I’m personally only a little uncomfortable with it but I figure there could be other readers who’d be much more upset about seeing that, especially on comics like yours, so I thought you should know…
