Sir, Butler and Boy ~ Stocks and Bonds ~ Cover
I had this idea in my head of the stock ticker tape (which was in use from 1870 so fits in the time period!) floating around wrapped hands and suddenly this cover was born! It’s the first one with The Boy as the centre piece- I hate to break tradition but dear lordy I love this one so much.
The border in this one is inspired by stock certificates, hence the Discord Comics wax seal of approval.
Oh, I love this page! If you had to break tradition, I couldn’t imagine a better way to do it!
Um, some context for not-english-natives? Stocks and bonds are financial things, this I know. Is stock ticker tape just a measuring tape [it looks like that], or also somehow financial?
Old stock tickertape carried printed information regarding the various stocks being traded in the stock market. If you look at today’s stock markets, you’ll likely see lightboards with the same information scrolling across; back at the time when this series is set, that information was simply printed on paper tape similar to that depicted around Boy’s wrists.
Here’s an illustration of the sort of thing you’d get on later ticker tape: https://www.sanglucci.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Stock-market-ticker-tape.jpg
It’s like morse code but logging the financials of companies!
It’s also a pun – “bonds” can be like “ties” or “restraints”. Hence bondage.
Stocks is also a pun on stockade…you’ll see what I mean monday.
Oh, thanks. Yes, initially I only got the “bondage” part, only later did I realize it can also have a financial meaning. ;)
Lovely.
even as an english native speaker, i didnt know what ticker tape was either.

here’s how wikipedia defines it; it cleared things up for me so i hope its equally helpful to you all~
props to tab for creating such a lovely and sensuous victorian image, once again!
Educating and titillating all at the same time!
^^^why i love nothing more than this genre of comics
