Who wants what is best for him? He just said his mom is using him.
The wording is confusing, especially without a couple of commas and the point being broken into two segments, but it’s meant to read like this I believe:
“All the fights made me realise that, despite her protests that she only wanted what was best for me, my mother only ever cared for herself and what she would get out of things.”
So basically that his mother claimed that she wanted what was best, all while being incredibly selfish every step of the way.
