No, I think so too… But to his defense; His hair just looks mostly awful in this particular page because it’s messy, but then again he’s also VERY drunk. Not many people look like beauty-queens after a night out dancing.

I absolutely love the last panel! The art is amazing, but I can hear Chris asking Anwar about the hug so clearly in my mind.
Does this mean Chris is asexual, too? If so, I completely missed that somewhere along the way. Love the whole undressing panel and Anwar’s drunken willingness to do whatever Chris’ kink.

I think it’s just that he has a modicum of self-control. You don’t have to be asexual to turn down sex from someone who’s obviously emotionally fragile (and drunk as a skunk) right now, y’know?
I don’t think we have enough information to gauge just yet where Chris’s sexuality falls. We know he’s divorced and into crossdressing and the kink scene. But the possibility still exists. Nobodyinparticular is right though – he could also just be a decent person :p
Makes sense. Just threw me when Chris offered a hug, something I seem to remember Anwar saying he preferred. Chris is a sweet, decent guy and a real friend to Anwar.
i do not think chris is asexual, not only is he being a decent person toward anwar, but i believe he’s being decent toward himself. anwar just waxed on about jd in his drunken stupor. he probably would first want to be sure that anwar had closure with his previous attachments before creating a new one. this is just responsible and sensible adult behavior :) good job tab!
Um, drunk people aren’t really in the state of mind to give actual consent. Unless there was a prearranged plan to have drunk sex, fucking someone who is drunk is rape. So, Chris is being more than considerate for Anwar and JD’s past relationship, he’s being a decent human being.
No, having sex with someone who is drunk without a prearranged plan to do so is not rape. There are some situations where it is rape and in many situations, it’s taking advantage of the drunk person, but it is not necessarily rape. In this situation, where the drunk individual has stripped down and offered, I cannot imagine any court convicting Chris of rape.
Don’t get me wrong. I agree he was being a decent person by not taking advantage of Anwar’s drunken state, but he certainly would not have been a rapist had he done so.
Chris would be having sex with someone who can’t consent. While in this case I believe there are a couple of things missing for it to LEGALLY be rape under the official definition (i.e. force), intercourse with someone who didn’t or can’t consent is rape. Whether he can get convicted is another story; most rapists don’t get convicted, and plenty don’t know that what they did is indeed rape. Being aware of things like that is very, very important.
Inability to consent is included in the legal definition of rape.
I don’t think he’s asexual, it’s just being a decent human being. Chris is stone-cold sober and Anwar is drunk off his face, obviously emotional fragile, and has previously informed Chris that he /is/ asexual, and so from Chris’ point of view it’s probably pretty obvious that Anwar probably doesn’t actually want to have sex, he’s just drunk and upset and thought that’s what Chris wanted.
This is a situation I’ve found myself in before; I’m ace, but when very drunk and emotionally fragile I have ended up in situations where I’ve offered to have sex with somebody just because I thought that’s what they wanted from me. They rejected the offer because they knew I was drunk, emotional and very much asexual, and the next morning I was extremely glad that they did.
It’s just human decency. If there’s any doubt in your mind that somebody is not in the state to properly consent and/or is offering sex for a reason other than wanting to, then you shouldn’t have sex with that person. It is always better to be on the sure side of things.
Actually, I was pondering about this too. Kinky asexuality – people who like a lot of things other than sex itself – are common enough. I don’t want people to interpret my comment as “omg he’s turning down sex he must be ace!!1! OMG” or anything of the sort; of course he’s being a decent human being, but the “I could give you a hug?” could potentially be taken as foreshadowing. It’s just not the response you’d exactly expect in this situation, although it’s certainly a cute and creative one.
Chris is a pretty cool and respectful person either way. I love his character a lot. I just think the idea of him being a different flavor of asexual in constrast with Anwar would be a really interesting turn of events.
I’ll take it a step further. I am betting Chris’s sexuality is irrelevant at thus point (aside from his bi or gay orientation). I bet he knows Anwar is ace and is going out of his way to respect that (hence the request for a hug)–as well as being a considerate human being and not having sex with a drunk person in an emotionally vulnerable state.
Yes, but what I am getting at here is this: we know Chris is a decent and awesome human being and judging by his character thus far in the comic I would certainly expect him to be decent and respect Anwar’s orientation and wishes. It would really suck if he turned out otherwise. He’s being respectful and awesome and understanding of his orientation. I don’t think anyone has misunderstood that.
HOWEVER. Anwar is lonely and has feelings for Chris. This comic could go in many directions and I would be happy with any of them, but the possibility of some sort of romantic happenings between Anwar and Chris is plausible. Someone as kinky as Chris turning out to be on the ace spectrum would be an interesting turn of events, and it would end up alleviating some of Anwar’s concerns. It’s not that people don’t understand the page, it’s that the story can go in different, twisty directions, and for many people, that’s the initial impression that the line gave. It’s not an “oh man, he’s totally ace” reaction, but a “hmm, maybe this is a potential storyline as well, that’s interesting” reaction.
And why are some people having this reaction? Well, judging from what I know of Chris so far, the line I would expect would be something more straightforward like “I know you don’t want this and that’s ok,” etc. The hug line is great and cute whether it implies other things about Chris’s sexuality or not. But that’s the great thing about it – it can be interpreted in multiple ways. I don’t think anyone is wrong for having an initial impression or for considering or speculating about potential interesting ideas that might pop up in the story.

The offer of a “hug,” specifically, as an offer of comfort was what made me wonder if Chris was a variation of asexual, too. Thanks for explaining it so well.

I know some people who become MORE co-ordinated up to a certain level of inebriation. It’s really wierd.
I have solved rubix cube set up rube goldberg machines and spoken fluent french while tanked. Not so much so while sober

Anwar is not the least bit sympathetic to me in this, or any of his sequences. I mean, yeah, I get that having nueroses regarding your own sexuality sucks, I’ve been there and bought the season pass. But dragging other people into your misery by deliberately inebriating yourself beyond your limits and then throwing yourself at someone else whom you know can’t in good conscience return your advances is just… really douchy and kinda evil.
Like I said, I get being confused about the whole subject of sex. But struggling with your inner demons is something that you need to figure out on your own. Friends can be capable of helping in this regard, but you have to recognize their limitations and you DEFINITELY have to ask their permission first, not inflict yourself upon them in the most infuriatingly irresponsible manner imaginable.
My sympathies go out to Chris here, who’s just trying to do the right thing, but I think that what Anwar needs at this point is a smack upside the head. That boy needs to learn that he can’t pull this kind of crap any more.
I disagree, Ry. Anwar doesn’t have a neuroses towards his sexuality -he’s plain asexual -he would never get drunk to deliberately throw himself at someone. Given the frankly appalling source material, I think Tab is doing an excellent job making the scenarios believable and the characters real. This is a much better alternative to the drinking scene in the books.
On top of which I’d say Anwar is just emotionally fragile and drunk, not at all neurotic. He knows what he is, and is comfortable with it. The problem he has is finding someone else who can fit with him in a long-term relationship. Thats where the emotional fragility comes from.
Drunk just excarbates the situation. As usual.
Um also remember he is Muslim and prolly never drank before? And had a lot of bad things leading up to him getting that drunk? I mean it doesn completely excuse him I guess but I am not seeing him as a terrible person or neurotic. How many ppl’s first time getting drunk was graceful? Esp after a bad night? Anyone?
He’s not confused, and he doesn’t have a neurosis. He’s ace, and he knows it. He didn’t start drinking with any intentions of doing something like this; he started drinking because things in his life (getting bad grades and stuff) currently were difficult, and he just wanted to forget it for a short while. He hasn’t really been drinking before, so he probably has no idea what is “too much” for himself, and ended up drunk beyond reason. When Chris brought him to his apartment (and bedroom), Anwar’s assumption was that Chris wanted sex. It was wrong, probably informed by what Anwar knows from movies and stuff, and Chris said no.
Since Anwar didn’t intend for such a situation (and didn’t expect it, and had no way of knowing it would occur), it wasn’t really his fault. Most likely, he had planned to be with JD and get home on his own, but things didn’t go as planned. Thus this mess. But he’s not being a bad person or anything, he’s just in a situation where he doesn’t know what to do, and does what he thinks is expected of him. Even if what he thinks is wrong.
(That was a rant, and I’m sorry. My thoughts are probably somewhat messy, but I hope you get the gist of it?)
Can I just point out here that Chris is not doing the ‘right’ thing, or the ‘decent’ thing, he is doing the /normal/ thing.
I think there’s so much discussion/talk/advice/assumptions about people getting drunk and then taken advantage of, or worse, that actual normal human behaviour gets forgotten.
Here’s the thing, most normal human beings, when faced with someone who is slurring, stumbling and smelling of vomit DO NOT WANT TO HAVE SEX WITH THEM. Yes you do get complete shits in clubs who will smirk over all the drunk people (or worse), but most men, most humans, when a person who smells of vomit staggers onto them and screams “have sex now!” will a) look insanely awkward and b) try and find someone else to hang said drunk person on before running for it.
And seriously, shoes aside, Anwar does not come across as particularly sexy right now.
True. Taking this further though, the offer of hugging a naked person who offered sex has many additional readings. My first thought was Chris could be ace–like a number of people suggested, but then I was thinking maybe he knows Anwar is ace and is offering affection on a level he knows Anwar is more comfortable with. JD has been hinting that they’ve been speaking to Chris about Anwar so it wouldn’t surprise me.

i love how human and vulnerable you drew naked anwar. i’m also really loving your story about asexual romance. i loved your previous stories (because i’m transgender and am a survivor). but find it hilarious how much i sympathize with this story, because i am (deeply) romantically involved with someone who is asexual. he’s my little anwar.
