Shades Of A 008
Sorry for the delay, the internet is out in my house so I’m stealing someone else’s wifi and the file off my phone.
I’m testing out a new font, let me know what you think!
Next livestream monday morning hopefully!

I prefer the old font, the new one is rather hard for me to read.
Yeah same here, really hard for me to read.
Same, the previous font was slightly nicer and more legible.
While I do appreciate anyone choosing to move away from comic sans, this font is tricky to read. The letters don’t seem to sit on a common line, they are positioned a point of two up or down from each other, giving it an unsettling appearance. Also, your’e a comic! You can get away with using comic sans :)
I’m afraid I have to agree about readability. That said. I don’t hate it enough to recommend comic sans.
In other news, I presume I’m in a minority in thinking Chris is gorgeous? it’s the beard and the lipstick and the collar bones combo that does it.
I think that the text is legible; however, it makes the dialogue sound choppy when I read it in voices in my mind.
This! I don’t know if it’s just me and KAs, but the font has an effect on how I read the voices. With this font, Chris is coming off as drunk and Anwar is coming off as scared. (Either that or they both have thick accents.)
i love the new font but that might just be because my handwriting looks a lot like it.
I like it better, too.
This font is much better.
I love this comic… I love the protagonist’s facial expressions.
I like the the letters in the new font a lot better, but they are too close together and like someone else said, don’t sit in a line, which makes it difficult to read. That said, I didn’t like the old font, either. : )
Another vote for the old font.
Also, FetLife shoutout!
You’re not the only one; Chris is really cute.
Might this be an adorable new broship forming?
I have no strong opinion either way regarding the font, but the white pixelisation around the speech bubbles is a little distracting. Everything else in the piece is very smooth and well-blended so it pops out.
This. The bits of white around the speech bubbles catch my attention more than the font change.
Could barely read it and had to move my laptop right in front of my face to make out the longer words… most definitely like the old one better :)
Pretty, but impossible to read.
Love the new font!! Really suites your new style and storyline. It’s totally readable – I wasn’t even wearing my reading glasses, and I read it just fine.
Please, if you decide to change it again, don’t use the previous one again. The previous font doesn’t suite the comic at all!
I def just went and searched Fet for that name….
Also, another vote for the old font.
Oh good, I’m not the only one!
I feel that the fetlife account should be made and referral to this comic.
ditto on the search *g*
Why is Anwar so scared of everyone?
Asexual at a BDSM club (This sounds like the start to a bad joke.) BDSM is already one of those really daunting things to get into, if you haven’t done your research beforehand (Which he clearly hasn’t) and it’s commonly perceived as highly sexual. This can combine to make for a VERY uncomfortable situation for an asexual. I was prepared, and I asked to come along, instead of being dragged by a friend, so it was easier on me, but I can totally see where Anwar’s coming from.
Honestly, find this font really tiny and the old font to be too narrow and slanty.
I think something like Action Man would go really nice with this comic. You can see it in action over here:

Fetlife… what an awesome place <3
I think if you increased the font size a bit it would be easier to read, maybe make it bold too? I don’t have any problems with this one but it seems to be mostly complaints.
While I can read this and the old font – I don’t find either of them particularly fast or easy to read. This one is probably even more difficult though.
Really love how sweet Chris is being to someone who is clearly uncomfortable! He could have chosen to be offended by Anwar’s attitude, but has instead chosen to be nice and help him out in a new, strange environment. Lovely. :)
I’ve found that a lot of people in the BDSM community tend towards very sweet and kind, especially to newbies. There are notable exceptions, I’m sure, but I’ve never been unlucky enough to meet them. I always try to be the nice person when I encounter newbies, because everyone was new once, and a little kindness can go a long way to make a daunting experience more enjoyable.
You might even say that he’s a sweet transvestite. /Rocky Horror
(couldn’t resist)
The lowercase t in particular is hard to read. There’s enough redundancy in English that it’s usually not a problem (for me anyway), but words like ‘transvestite’, since there’s 3 ts and it starts with a t, require conscious effort to read. Just speculation, but I think that kind of thing pulls readers out of the story.
Anwar and Chris’s noses are great :3
I preferred the old one, and I wasn’t exactly crazy about it. This one’s hard to read.
I agree with everyone who is saying that this font is harder to read. I was having issues with the old one too. For me the letters were too close together and the slant made it worse. I’d still read it regardless of what font you use.
Another thing worth mentioning, and only something that I noticed now (since this is my first comment), the pink color in the text inputs makes it nearly invisible on the tan background. I can only see what I typed if I hover over the field to turn it dark brown again.
I have no problems with either font and I read this comic on my Blackberry. I find it perfectly legible, same for the old one.
Loving this comic! Chris is awesome and I love Anwar to bits already. :)
I’m just glad the “I”s have serifs. Interesting though.
Wait, I think this is the correct email.
New font is hard to read. Too thin, and squiggly. Pretty, though. Just not comic-legible eligible.
Agreed, font is hard to read. Had to see if there is a profile on Fet for MrRedVixen though!
Personally, I think the font is just fine. I had no trouble reading it. Live Anwar and Chris. I think they’re going to be pretty freakin’ awesome.
Not a fan of the new font either. Sure it’s legible, but it just doesn’t look right. It’s a very sloppy way of writing & it doesn’t suit the style of comic at all.
Perhaps something like that could be applied to internal dialogue, but a more formal font be used for actual dialogue?
Ohhh Fetlife. I have been a member for four years..-Hugwolf-
In my opinion, using “fancy” fonts for comics distracts from the artwork. I think something simple, clean, and easy to read is the best for regular dialogue in a comic. You want the written dialogue to be something that people read and understand without really noticing that they’re reading it. Their visual focus should be on the artwork, the text itself should almost fade into the background. Texts that are too “fancy” or unique draw attention to the text blocks and away from the comic. This is fine when you want to create a specific effect, but probably not that great for people just chatting.
That’s just what I think, though. I’m definitely not a comic artist or in design of any kind, so I won’t be offended if you disagree!
Lori makes a very good point. Unless it was to make a point, the font really should not be drawing so much attention. The images should carry the most weight, and the words the rest. The only time I expect font to convey something is when a word or two are altered to make a point or for sound effects (the fat BIFF, POW type of thing).
That said, just have to say I love how Anwar is perfectly willing to admit straight out that he’s terrified and completely out of his element. He certainly was quick to set a glass down and shake hands with Chris.
This font is totally ok for me to read. I like better this non-bold and non-italic font :)
I’m really enjoying the comic so far Tab. As far as the font goes, my advice would be to find someone you know IRL who’s dyslexic who you can help you go through fonts with. Dyslexic people tend to have the hardest time, as a group, in reading text, so their suggestions could be most valuable. It’s often found that what they find easiest is easiest for the majority of people. This is why good powerpoints/websites/lecture handouts tend to be designed with them in mind. You’re doing a fantastic job with this by the way. It’s really interesting to see such a different (equally awesome) art style from you.
new font is hard to read
Am I the only one disappointed that MrRedVixen isn’t actually a profile on fet? I would say that it would be an awesome “Easter Egg” to make a profile for Chris!
The new Font looks neat but it’s a tad difficult to read…
And don’t worry, i was kinda wondering why there was no update but i think everyone will accept a late update if there is a valid reason.
I giggle because I’m apart of fetlife <33333
I’m not too fond of this font for this. It’s a cool font but it’s mroe like a ‘shaken up’ font, as in would be good for shivering or somethign like that. I’d suggest this site, if you don’t know it: http://www.blambot.com/index.shtml for fonts. He designs fonts specifically for comics.
I prefer this font over the older one, but I’m not too fond of either of them. I’m loving the way Chris’ face is being drawn, it’s very animate and fun to see.
This font is hard to read and hurts my eyes.
I’m not a fan of the new font. The older one was much more suited to this style of art, but I could adapt. What’s really bothering me is the jagged white pixels around the speech bubbles, which is contrasting with the smooth linework and pops out. It’s distracting me from the actual comic.
When you have a lot of dialogue, it’s better to lean more towards less artistic and more functional font because it gets hard to read. The spacing between letters on this font is definitely better, but the random differences in size and vertical positioning is uuh… a poor choice from the typographer who made this.
Why is everyone complaining about the font? I can read it just fine… and I’m probably half blind after all of this time on the computer.
By the way, I LOVE that a non-stereotypically attractive person has been featured in this webcomic ^_^
page 8 and we get to find out his name XD
cool name though
Congratulations, someone asexuality.org found your comic, and put it on a list of webcomics that feature asexual characters.
I really like that your main character is not only asexual, but also a man. Helps clear the misconception that men can’t be asexual :-)
I adore Anwar. Also it’s nice to have someone in media you can relate to, such an agonizingly small lot of Ace characters
Ahaha, fetlife.
Anwar sure knows how to make a first impression :3
