And it’s this side of Anwar that makes me wonder when people hate on him in the comments. Sure, he screws up sometimes and sure, he often overreacts saying things he doesn’t end up meaning, but ultimately, he’s a good guy who just wants to be there for the people he cares about.
Agreed. There have been moments when I disliked him, but I think that just made him more of a well-rounded character. We all misspeak or phrase things poorly in the moment or snap at people who don’t deserve it sometimes. Anwar’s far from perfect, but he generally means well and he’s doing his best.
He said it himself to Chris a few panels back, when being asked about how okay he actually is with the gender stuff:
“Like I know more than some people, though *hotdamn* that’s through fucking up a lot.”
He does fuck up, and sometimes he fucks up pretty damn big and horrible, and usually it takes a few panels for us to see him learning, growing, maturing, apologizing, atoning, or otherwise dealing with the harm caused. In the meantime, he does end up hated on for that fuckup (and past fuckups that are still in our memory).
Also, as readers, we also may react to his fuckups based on our own experiences. Sometimes his fuckups can be triggering. Sometimes they are way too reminiscent of something a reader has felt the pain of. He can be a target replacement for the memory of someone who was cruel, thoughtless, or otherwise fucked up.
Anwar is so sweet on this page. :) It’s thinks like this that make me certain that he just fucks up sometimes on his way to learning the right way to deal with things and react to them. That and I think he’s a lot better at dealing with other people’s troubles and personal confusion than his own.
This is why I admire your work, Tab. You make your characters real. They screw up and they are capable of wisdom. They are sweet yet they have darker edges too. They are, for lack of a better word, human.
Anwar is a great guy. I know some people hate him, but the way I see it…he’s really misguided and can’t really express himself well, but he tries and keeps improving himself.
These last two pages honestly hit me pretty deep. I’m glad most of my friends are like Anwar, and the internet isn’t as shitty about this anymore. JD is my favorite character (besides poof obviously), and honestly I kinda feel for them. JD’s awesome, this story is awesome, and all the characters are awesome, and you awesome author person you’re awesome too.
Good on Anwar for those insightful words, also love JD- “Dude this half-naked hug is weird now”

I’ll admit I hate on him from time to time, but moments like this really redeem him for me.

*things
But aren’t most people? I know I am :p
Hmm. Good point. I’m not sure, but maybe?
Thank you, Tab. Those are the most important words I’ve heard so far in this series.

Wardorable XD
Sailor Chris? :D
Precious Anwar, he’s just so good
